Concept

By using matching of academia "Seeds" that lead to medical applications, social and corporate "Needs", ARDENT is an organization that aims for the development of medical technology.

Greetings from the director

I would like to introduce you to the Asia-Pacific Research and Development Network (ARDENT).

In Japan the level of life science research is among the top in the world. However when it comes to the establishment of a structure regarding research outcomes and practical application, Japan is generally quite slow. In order to solve this problem, in 2007 the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology started the “Translational Research Base Development Project," which was designed to link the implementation of 4 major fields of life science into one according to details outlined in “, The Third Science and Technology Basic Plan." This project has been at progressing as Translational Research Network Program since 2012. On the same year the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s Clinical Research Core Hospital Project began in order to implement clinical trials and clinical research and for that purpose a support system for the development of the best possible medical care was created. Furthermore this year, at the center of", The Scientific Technique Innovation Strategy – Next Level Japan Creation Challenge-,“ the strengthening of industrial competitiveness in the fields of medicines and medical devices (including the implementing the practical application of the most advanced research techniques) was set up as a national level initiative. This initiative is involved in; matters related to the use of non-invasive/minimally invasive diagnostics, early stage diagnostics, radiotherapy, nano-bio devices, surgery support robots, diagnostic support, matters related to medical software application and progression of medical device development along with forming research and development and support structures for biomedicine and novel medicine generation. The initiative will also put implement ways to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the practical use of the most advanced medicines and medical devices in addition to maintaining a system to develop novel medicine techniques while sticking to evaluation guidelines. That is to say, we want to create a clear a path to the center of the life innovation initiatives that this country desperately needs.

The Kyushu University Hospital Center for Clinical and Translational Research has adopted the Translational Research Network Project and the Clinical Research Core Hospital Improvement Project, in order to search for promising Seeds, support development and to begin implementation, not just at Kyushu University but also over the whole academic area of West Japan. We have already listed up many Seeds and started several first in human trials of novel drugs. In addition, this year an academic life innovation implementation network in the west Japan area called, West Japan Academia Translational Research Network (WAT-NeW) was founded.

It should be noted that the commercialization of novel medicine or medical devices cannot be realized without licensing out from a drug company or medical device related company. That is to say, industrial and academic collaboraion is an indispensably important matter in the advancement of nationwide life innovation. However as it stands now there is no current system in place to constantly support the smooth connection of academic research and the industrial world to a high enough level. It is with this in mind that the plan for foundation of a network to tie together the industrial world and the field of academia known as the Asia-Pacific Research and Development Network (ARDENT) is being put into place.

Through this network we can take Seeds developed in this country and bring them to society, make the medical industry and medical device industry competitive on an international level, and help to foster a leading global industry. It will be the job of ARDENT to take requests to support groundbreaking novel medicine being brought to society as a whole. We would like to thank you for your enthusiastic participation in the future.
